Welcome to Cheung Chau Island
Although Hong Kong may be a noisy bustling city, Bethany's island location is genuinely unique. This small and friendly island with no cars, pollution or constant noise, has sandy beaches and peaceful walks around rocky coves plus the convenience of a small holiday town in the centre of the island with many restaurants and fascinating shops, banks and a main post office. Cheung Chau maintains a large fishing fleet with many fisher folk maintaining traditional lifestyles aboard authentic wooden junks.

Beaches
For those who want to venture beyond Bethany's peaceful hillside setting with its views over the South China Sea, there are two good beaches within a few minutes downhill walk. The first, Kwun Yam, is a small pleasant beach, quieter than the main one because it is further for most people to walk. The main beach, Tung Wan, is a few minutes farther passing a bronze-age rock carving at the foot of the Warwick Hotel. These beaches are two of the cleanest beaches in Hong Kong, fully maintained in the summer months with lifeguards, shark nets, diving rafts and refreshments. There is also a more secluded beach known as Italian Beach about 30 minutes from Bethany and other rocky coves and small beaches
.
Walks
There are many interesting walks around the island where you can explore the coastal paths and coves or simply find a secluded rock overlooking the sea and enjoy some solitude. Why not try one of our prayer walks or, if you have children with you, ask at the office for the Bethany Trailfinders sheet and go on your own treasure hunt to the pirates' cave. If you want a really challenging walk, take the inter-island ferry from Cheung Chau to Lantau island and enjoy the walking trails and peaks. Lantau is ideal for a day's outing. If walking isn't you, there are buses to various parts of Lantau where you can explore further.
Sports
Cheung Chau has a surprising variety of sports facilities. Canoes and windsurfing boards are available for rent at the beach and sports centres offer basketball, volleyball, squash, badminton and tennis. Bicycle and tricycle hire is easily available in the town. Three minutes downhill from Bethany there is a running track and basketball and soccer.  At Bethany we have basketball and table tennis.

Restaurants

There are a variety of very good restaurants on Cheung Chau. Chinese restaurants serve a variety of dishes and the seafood is very popular. There are International restaurants that are well worth visiting too. Inevitably, there's also McDonald's.

Shopping
Most of the usual supplies for lunch and picnics are available from the island's two supermarkets although you may prefer to buy bread, fruit, barbeque and salad stuff from some of the smaller stores. There are two personal stores on Praya Street, the main thoroughfare that runs past the pier and several beach shops and gift shops to choose from. Bethany also has its own "Snack Shop" selling, soft drinks, ice creams and snacks
.
Churches
There are several churches on Cheung Chau although no services are currently held in English. Bethany has a time of fellowship at 10.30 a.m. most Sundays to which all guests are welcome.
